Bio

I am a postdoctoral researcher and visiting professor at the VUB, attached to the Secular Studies Association Brussels (SSAB) research group. My expertise is in the history of secularity, secular humanism, church-state relations and bioethical issues (20th century). I work at the intersection of history, philosophy and anthropology within the broader field of secular studies. As part of my expertise, I function as editor of the journal Secular Studies (Brill), associate director of the International Society for Historians on Atheism, Secularism and Humanism (ISHASH) and secretary of the Belgian Association for Religious Studies (Babel).

Most recently, I co-edited the open-access volume The Non-Religious and the State. Seculars Crafting Their Lives in Different Frameworks from the Age of Revolution to the Current Day(with Jeffrey Tyssens and Stefan Schröder).

Main research fields:

  • Secularity and secularism

  • Secular humanism and organised unbelief

  • Church-state relations

  • History of bioethical issues
